Chicago Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology |
Welcome to the therapist finder service of the Chicago Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology. This is a free service provided to the public by our organization. Our members are all highly qualified licensed professionals who have private practices in Chicago or its suburbs. Providers' fees vary.
In searching for a psychotherapist, you most likely have a specific problem or group of problems in mind. These may be depression, anxiety, problems in love or work, symptoms such as phobias, panic attacks, or being shy, or problems in relating to children, adolescents, a partner, or parents. Counseling may also be beneficial in dealing with issues such as loss and grief, the after-effects of trauma, concerns about sex or sexual orientation, or impulses that push an individual to engage in self-destructive behaviors ranging from the compulsive use of the internet to suicide. Psychodynamic treatment is designed to enhance an individual's understanding of repetitive patterns of behavior that are part of his or her personality. These patterns tend to be particularly apparent when the individual is a member of a couple.
All the therapists represented on this site engage in psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy; some may also practice psychoanalysis. The dynamic approach, when effective, helps the individual to understand both conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The medium for gaining this understanding is the relationship the client or patient has with the therapist. In the course of treatment, discussion will most likely cover current problems and relationships, life history and how it relates to these problems, interests and fantasies, dreams, and the relationship with the therapist. Each therapeutic pair carves out a unique relationship and course of treatment. The approach is highly individualized and not easily described in a manual; it differs from the behavioral approaches in its focus on insight into emotional experience.
